What is Depression?
Imagine waking up every day feeling like a weight is pressing down on you, making it hard to even move or think clearly. The things you once loved, like a favorite song, a close friend, or a relaxing hobby, feel far away, as though they no longer belong to you. Every task—whether it’s getting dressed or answering a simple email—feels overwhelming. You might find your mind filled with relentless thoughts of blame or guilt, even when you’ve done nothing wrong.
This isn’t laziness or weakness—it’s me, your depression, affecting your body and mind. But I’m not all-powerful. With time, support, and the right tools, you can lift this weight and rediscover the light hidden behind the fog.
Common Symptoms of Depression
To diagnose depression, at least four of the following symptoms are usually present:
- Self-blame or excessive guilt.
- Decreased self-esteem or feelings of worthlessness.
- Thoughts of death or suicide.
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
- Restlessness, agitation, or slowed physical movements.
- Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia or oversleeping.
- Changes in appetite or noticeable weight gain or loss
When Depression Escalates
In severe cases, depression can progress to a state known as psychosis, where individuals may experience delusions or hallucinations. This phase requires immediate medical attention.
A depressive episode can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months, typically 3 to 6 months without treatment. The goal of treatment is to shorten the duration of the episode and protect you from its most harmful effects.
